Insulated garage doors in Grand Junction, CO: A garage that holds its temperature

Cold drafts are often worn seals, which is a small repair. A thin, uninsulated door is a bigger one. When you compare insulated doors, DASMA TDS-163 says to look past section R-value to the whole-door U-factor.

Start small

Drafts, dust and light under the door

Daylight under or beside a closed door means air, dust and insects get in too. The bottom seal and the perimeter weatherstrip wear out long before the door does.

  • Daylight along the bottom or sides of the closed door
  • A cracked, flattened or torn bottom rubber seal
  • Dust or leaves drifting in after a windy day
  • Gaps between sections you can see through from inside

Comparing doors

R-value and U-factor are not the same thing

DASMA TDS-163 says that for garage doors, U-factor and R-value are not reciprocals of each other. R-value usually describes the insulated section alone. U-factor, tested under ANSI/DASMA 105, describes heat flow through the whole door, including joints and edges.

Ask for U-factor

Lower is better. It is the fairer way to compare two insulated doors.

Read R-value with care

A high section R-value does not mean the whole door performs that way.

Seals matter too

A well-insulated door with gaps at the floor still leaks.

No savings promises

We do not quote energy savings. They depend on your garage, your house and your habits.

Grand Valley weather

Cold nights and hot afternoons

The NWS Grand Junction station digest lists a January mean temperature of 27.4 °F and about 19 inches of snow a year. An insulated door can keep an attached garage less cold in winter and less hot in summer, which matters most when the garage shares a wall with living space.

Short answers

Insulation questions, answered first

Short answers.

Can I add insulation to my existing door?

Kits exist, but results are limited. Add-on panels do not seal the joints and can add weight the springs were not set for. A new insulated door is the usual route when warmth matters.

Is a higher R-value always better?

Not as a way to compare whole doors. DASMA TDS-163 points to whole-door U-factor under ANSI/DASMA 105 as the better comparison.

Is replacing a bottom seal a big job?

Usually not. It is one of the smaller repairs, and it often fixes drafts and dust on its own.
